DAY RETREAT: Bible Women Speak
PRESENTER: Olivia Woodford
Wednesday, April 10 – 9:30 – 3:30 pm
THEME: The Heart of the Cross – A Lenten Retreat
Nourish your faith by joining others in the wooded retreat setting of Avila to contemplate The Passion of Christ through the eyes of the women who bore witness to Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and Resurrection. The retreat features Olivia’s performance of her acclaimed one-woman Passion Play, The Heart of the Cross. Between each of the play’s vignettes, there will be reflection, prayer, scripture reading, and small group discussion. By exploring the women who witnessed the Passion, discover how their devotion and love inspires and deepens your faith and relationship with Christ.
For over two decades, Olivia Woodford’s portrayals of Mary Magdalene, Veronica and Mother Mary and Martha have transported audiences across the country to the foot of the cross in an immediate and experiential way. Through the play and this retreat, deepen your faith and connection to the mysteries and revelations found at the heart of the Passion.

Ignatian Retreat for Men
May 17-19, 2019
Avila Retreat Center, Durham, NC
This our 12th silent men’s retreat is jointly sponsored by St. Luke’s and St. Raphael’s Knights of Columbus Councils with St. Raphael’s Office of Life Long Faith Formation. Avila Retreat Center is located at 711 Mason Rd., Durham. The retreat starts Friday (5/17) at about 5 PM and closes Sunday (5/19) around noon. This experience in solitude and prayer opens us to God’s plan for us and those entrusted to us.
Fr. Christopher J. Ryan, S.J., Associate Pastor, St. Raphael the Archangel Parish in Raleigh, will direct the retreat. Joining the Jesuits in 2004, after graduation from Dartmouth College as a geography major, he studied and earned a master’s in philosophy and a master’s in divinity and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. Fr. Chris has taught in a Jesuit middle school, assisted in student retreats at Holy Cross, and served in Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Guatemala. As retreat director, Father Chris will lead, explain and draw on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Mass is scheduled on Sunday. Familiar devotions, brief talks, personal prayer – and general retreat silence — will augment the prayerful solitude of the weekend. There will be ample time for prayer, reflection, meditation, and an optional personal conference or confession. Past retreatants attest to the value of this Ignatian spiritual experience – as their relation with the Lord was strengthened and deepened.
Avila Center is unique as a retreat environment — a peaceful and reflective setting for meditation and prayerful walks around the wooded landscape. The $195 cost for the three-day retreat includes a private overnight room for two nights, two dinners, two breakfasts and two lunches.
